Non-timber forest products: The value of wild plants
Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are wild plant and animal products harvested from forests, such as wild fruits, nuts, edible roots, honey, medical plants and bush meat. Millions of people – especially those living in rural areas in developing countries – collect these products daily, and selling them is a means of income generation for many. This booklet presents an overview and explains the significance of major commercial wild plant products from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Using case-studies to illustrate important aspects of NTFP harvesting, the text provides a valuable source of information for forest-dependent communities and should raise awareness of the global potential of NTFPs.
