Roots and tubers value chain development and food and nutrition security - Caribbean

Root and tuber crops (RTCs) are traditional staples in St.Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). As fresh exports, dasheen, eddoe, sweet potato, ginger, arrowroot and yam are the most economically significant. Cottage industries such as the making of crisps and chips, are adding value to cassava, sweet potato and dasheen. However, improvements to the structure and processes of these minor agro-businesses are needed if they are to experience sustainable growth and expansion. To ensure the necessary infrastructure, training and research is put in place, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), have been providing technical support including organising training sessions for farmers and processors. This has enabled cottage industries to continue to contribute to food security, foreign exchange earnings and provide employment for the Vincentian people.
